into the dye-pot: a rusty bundle

I found both a rusty bolt and a sewing machine bobbin (with thread) when I was weeding in the Buddha garden the other day. I'd been wanting some rusty items to put in dye bundles and lo and behold, two appeared. I can't imagine how the bobbin made its way out there, it looks like it's from my machine. And, oh dear, I just this second realized that the bolt might be from the kitchen table. But what's done is done.

Silk shantung with eucalyptus leaves, marigold petals, and rusty items. I'm thinking a solar dye-jar.

As I was sitting on the ground assembling the bundle, one of the girls was about 5" from my face having her lunch.

  1. This is going to be interesting Peggy! When I was in Japan I was constantly looking for rusting items as India suggested, but Japan being so clean I only found one flat piece.

  2. A rusty surprise!
The bundle looks like a "ceremony" of some sort :)
Tiny Hover Bees and I are "good friends"(smiles). Whenever I am sitting outside they seem to come around me. I like that!
Maybe they are my spirit "animal/bug"

  4. Interesting bundle...looking forward to your results (and maybe that bolt will clean up beautifully for your table after the dyeing).

  7. Nat, I hope something good comes out of this -- I'd been looking for something for a while, too. My husband gave me some nails but I hadn't gotten around to rusting them although, geez, how hard would that have been!! Just too many things to do and make!

  8. Marie, they very well could be spirit bees for you! Yes, I agree, dye bundles do have a ceremonial feel, both the rolling and the unrolling!

  10. Jacky, I hope the bundle turns out to be something -- and that the bolt will clean up as you say, if it's the right one!

  12. Wow .. maybe I could sell my rust items. I just have to laugh because I live in a very old house where the land owner would dump their trash off the side of the yard because it went down a hill. In the spring before all the plant growth takes over I can go down there and have my pick of rusty items. It's not quite a junk yard but there is lots to choose from. After learning to do more eco-dying this has becomre more like a treasure spot !! haha.. Love all your work here!!

  14. Tammy -- I bet you have a ball finding treasures! Reminds me of those dreams where you come upon a new room filled with wonderful things -- but you just step out your door! I've never dyed with blueberries before but reading your comment reminds me that there's a basket of shriveled-up blueberries in the fridge! Ha.
