giveaway: this old project #4

Continuing on the pledge to resolve unfinished projects, this time up is a bead-knit watermelon bag

This was begun back in the day -- see the fancy instruction sheet with kid-scribbling all over it! A hank of tiny black glass beads, teflon-type needle & thread for the beads, thread for knitting (DMC Cebelia Cotton, Made in France), knitting needles (one is bent), and basically no directions. I think I was meaning to knit two identical pieces with one a bit longer to be a flap-closure. Or a clasp could be attached, too.

I know for a fact that I'll never finish this. If anyone would like this, I'll mail it to you next Wednesday. Just let me know if you're interested, and if there's more than one beader or knitter out there who would take it, we'll have a draw.

And I'll type up the "directions" for you, too!

  1. Could this make a little purse? i might try to finish it, if it does! it's hard to see the size.

  2. Herm, yes it is to be a tiny little purse or necklace purse or shoulder-strap purse -- the top is about 2 1/4" and the bottom is about 4 3/4" -- the length is about 4 1/4" -- they're called bead-knitted amulet bags over at Ravelry if you take a look at the bead-knitting section there. It's a style from the early 1900's from what I gather, Victorian style, also called a swag purse. Just let me know! I'll be mostly out of touch the next few days because I'm going to ND for my dad's 100th birthday party!

  3. Those amulet bags are addictive to make, but I never used mine and sold them or gave as gifts.

All the best wishes to your Dad on this great occassion!

  4. I would have said yes to taking it, but fear you would want to see it finished soon and the pressure would be too much. HA! I was trying to think if there was something else I could turn it into, (I have several amulet neck bags) like a wrist cuff or something. but.. .Nice start to this project though, like the looks of it.

  5. Cheryl, they would be a pretty special gift -- for some reason, bead-knitting just never took off with me . . . and thanks for the birthday wishes, we had a good time!

  6. Helen, there are NO strings attached to this, pardon the pun! If you could use the thread and beads in any way, I'd be happy to pass it along. I really mean it!
