equinox

Today is either Autumn or Spring Equinox, depending on where you live. Today we can all see due east and due west and the sun directly overhead at Noon.

I've already missed the sunrise but I hope to view the sunset tonight and note exactly where in the horizon it sets to learn what is due west for me. From now on then, I'll be able to notice the change in the sun's setting points.

I really like the idea of balance occuring between light and dark. I like feeling as if it might be a little easier for me to reach a sense of balance now. That if I simply take time to pause, calm will arrive and time will stop, too -- or at least it'll slow down a bit.

Lately I notice that I don't decorate the house for seasonal holidays like when I had children at home. Instead I usually stitch something. I like to celebrate in that way now. So I stitched a circle in the center of a dark and light weaving. With red markers for the equinoxes. Reminders to pause and rebalance.

Then a little four-patch of black and white linen. Again with red threads.

Happy Autumn/Spring weekending. xo

  4. Love the red thread and your beautiful photos. It all feels so cleansing, and balanced. Putting things right to start a new season and new year ( the Jewish New Year is next Thursday, and autumn has always been new year to me.)

  5. Deanna, thank you --it does sort of look floating, doesn't it? I wish your temps would drop about 10 degrees, I feel for you and the plants and the wildlife there in TX. You deserve the perfect autumn, winter & spring after the summer you've been through!

  6. Cindy, thanks -- I tried to watch the sunset and realized the best I can do is see what trees it sinks between! What was I thinking, I can't see anything close to a horizon where I live in the middle of the city! But hey, it's still due west...

  7. Nancy, thanks...hot there, too? It's a little bit warmer than normal here in CO but nothing like TX. I'm trying not to wish for a freeze so the bees will be able to feed a little bit longer. Learning to winterize the hive tomorrow...fingers crossed!

  8. Hi Cheryl and thanks...as long as we have the new to look forward to, I think there's hope! I celebrate the autumn equinox with a group of women and one always brings the traditional apples and honey as part of our shared meal! Happy New Year to you!

  10. It's really feeling like fall here. Hoping for just a bit more warmth as the grapes are just starting to turn color.

Stitching seems like such a wonderful way to mark the changing of seasons...

  11. Autumn always seems to creep up so slowly and then when it is really here, at least this year, it's as if everything changed overnight...your first image describes this perfectly for me...

  14. Suzanna, thank you -- that is a really nice compliment. I know what you mean, once it finally freezes, it's a surprise, and then I even have the nerve to whine about it!
