The Earth Is Our Mother

I love this song by Libana. And this video has some lovely visuals -- mountains with eyes and a pregnant woman with an Earth belly. I gave birth 26 years ago on this day to an over-11 lb. baby and I looked like that. Minus the body paint, of course.

The Earth is our Mother, we must take care of Her
The Earth is our Mother, we must take care of Her
Hey yana, ho yana, hey yan, yan
Hey yana, ho yana, hey yan, yan

Her sacred ground we walk upon
With every step we take
Her sacred ground we walk upon
With every step we take
Hey yana, ho yana, hey yan, yan
Hey yana, ho yana, hey yan, yan

The Earth is our Mother, She will take care of us
The Earth is our Mother, She will take care of us
Hey yana, ho yana, hey yan, yan
Hey yana, ho yana, hey yan, yan

The Earth is our Mother, we must take care of Her
The Earth is our Mother, we must take care of Her
Hey yana, ho yana, hey yan, yan
Hey yana, ho yana, hey yan, yan

Her sacred ground we walk upon
With every step we take
Her sacred ground we walk upon
With every step we take
Hey yana, ho yana, hey yan, yan
Hey yana, ho yana, hey yan, yan

The Earth is our Mother, She will take care of us
The Earth is our Mother, She will take care of us
Hey yana, ho yana, hey yan, yan
Hey yana, ho yana, hey yan, yan

The Earth is our Mother, we must take care of Her
The Earth is our Mother, we must take care of Her
Hey yana, ho yana, hey yan, yan
Hey yana, ho yana, hey yan, yan

That about says it all on this Earth Day weekend.

  1. I love this song, too! It was included in the music selection for Gavin's music class last year, and it was one of my favorites.

  5. Wonderful video and good reminder.
I have never heard of this group.
The statue of the woman laying in and out of the earth is my favorite.
In my twenties I would hear folks talk about the earth as our mother and I believed it, but did not really "see" it until the last few years. I am a little slow sometimes.:)

  6. Ive not heard of the group before, but love the chanting style to this piece. Is that womans statue a naturally overgrown piece of art work then? Its stunning......... please tell me its not a photoshopped piccy? lol However if it is its still bneautiful and very apt.

  7. Marie, if you listen to Libana, you will fall in love. Many of the songs I sang with my children and now I sing them with my women's spirituality circle and just around the house with the dogs!Once you learn the song/chants, they stay.

  8. Lyn, all of Libana's songs have the feel of a chant and the words could definitely be used as a spoken or whispered chant. Many are suited to be sung in rounds, too. I know it's old-fashioned but sometimes it's just nice to get together with other women and sing -- find our voices again. And, believe me, I do not have a great, or even good, voice! I'm not sure about that shape of a woman -- but you're right, it's still beautiful.
