blues in the dye-pot

Today is a waning March moonday in the sign of Capricorn. All indicators point toward the important work of letting go and wrapping up loose ends. I'm keeping this in mind as I go about my business -- adjusting to the ideas of loosening attachments and letting go of preconceived ideas.

As Nanette mentioned on her blog, Stitch and Sow, we are doing a dye-along together -- striving for the color green using different types of blue cloth in a turmeric dye-bath. She has had a cotton piece soaking for a few days and already shows some green, but mine was just begun. Fingers crossed. Here is my last encounter with turmeric.

When I was looking for blues to dye with, I found a half-basted fairy cloth rolled up in some light blue linen -- I'd complete forgotten about it but now I remember that it is one of my favorite pieces, if that makes sense.

The little primitive dollies are from long-ago when my kids were reading the Little House on the Prairie books -- I made them for the tree at Yule. They are so very sweet. I'm going to do something with them but it may not happen until closer to Dias de los Muertos. Now you know what I'm thinking, right?

Looking for guidance last week, I drew from my mom's angel deck five days in a row. I liked most of the cards I got, especially clarity because that one came right after I posted last Monday about clearing winds. Obedience ruffled my feathers though -- I don't like to obey. Thought about it for a while and decided it would be okay if I related to it in the context of obeying the law and also obeying Mother Nature. Realized then that I'm actually very obedient. The things you learn about yourself.

Wishing you a beautiful spring/autumn week!

  3. Me too previously indigo dyed cotton blues in tumeric! Ha/ Oh I do feel the waning moon...lots of loose ends to pick away at...and one more storm due tomorrow. I 'm very fond of those dollies...guess they plan to get scarified soon.

  4. Peggy, you have a wonderfully pretty range of blues to dye, and I see a little green already on your cloth. Just so you know, the link to your last encounter with turmeric goes to my blog...I don't mind but I'd love to see what happened with you and turmeric:) and the wee dollies, sweet. This waning moon is in my sign, must be why I'm managing to get a lot done and not feel exhausted. And joy and grace in there with obey ...that's gotta be good. have a lovely week. Oh and I want to ask about your equinox gathering with your friends too.

  5. You Fairy cloth is enchanting.
Love, Love it, especially the way the Suns rays turn. Great natural dyed piece.
I am always trying to get a natural green without over dyeing, I've got a few but never a really pretty one, but I'll keep trying that's the fun of it.

  6. I probably would have had a similar reaction to "Obedience" and I like how your post got me thinking about it differently. Obedient to weekly postings - you are. Obedient to the craft challenges you set for yourself. Obedient to spiritual practices that guide you. See? And, of course, obedient to Mother Nature is a good one!

  7. My mother was a doll maker and made dolls exactly like the ones you've posted! So sweet to see them. My new goal is to start some wool dying this spring! Hopefully, that will happen......

  9. Deanna and Michelle -- thank you both. The turmeric experiment doesn't look to be going in the direction Nanette and I hoped for though. ;) Live and learn.

  10. Nanette, my cloth-in-turmeric seems to be going the yellow route, same as yours. I'm thinking a weaker solution....? I fixed the link, thanks. We celebrated spring with an unnaming exercise and then renaming ourselves using colors, something I'd never thought about before. Followed by drumming and food, too. Always food. :)

  11. Thanks, Kathy! -- yes, the search for green continues for me, too, even though I just had a bit of luck with it recently. You can never have too many greens, right?

  12. Dee, thank you, I loved reading your thoughts on obedience -- my interpretation has just expanded greatly. Obedience might also relate to nonresistance which creates peace. Wow, it's all SO good. :)

  13. Dulcy, ah, so glad these simple little dollies reminded you of your mother's doll-making. She probably wouldn't appreciate what I'm thinking of doing to them, come Dias de los Muertos. I'm not even sure I can go through with it yet. :)
