sewing and dyeing golden yellow

The golden yellow continues. The weekend plan is to make two Japanese knot bags, one with the bottom two fabrics, the other with the top two. I need easy-to-carry bags for an herbal conference next month and hope these will be just right. If anyone has made this pattern, I welcome suggestions and tips.

Just started this dye bundle with the golden yellow of dandelion on a silk blouse remnant and a piece of wool felted tree skirt. By picking these flower heads, I prevented thousands of seeds from self-sowing. I'm not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing as dandelion is such a useful plant. But we already have enough in our backyard to make medicine for a small village so I guess it's okay.

Also made up this dye bundle with the golden yellow of mahonia stems and her leaves on another silk blouse remnant. Lyn had great success with mahonia last April so I thought I'd give it a try, too. Fingers crossed.

Thanks for visiting here and happy new moon weekending! Tomorrow is the new moon in the sign of Taurus, ideal for planting in the garden. And projects begun now are especially long-lasting so seemingly a great day for more dyeing, as well.

    1. Deanna, thanks -- I wish I dyed it but it was a dress from goodwill.

  2. Please show the completed bags :) Those fabrics are so cheery.
I have that same bowl in blue! It was my son's favorite cereal bowl growing up!

  3. I had no success with the leaves though am sure Indias book said it was the leaves that gave her results. I dont recall her saying anything about the mahonia bark so maybe hers is a different variety.

    Enjoy!

    1. Lyn, you're right, India lists leaves but not bark. Or maybe bark is under a different list. I followed your lead on this one!

  4. Those fabrics are gorgeous Peggy...I dont know which combination is my favourite. I am always drawn to indigo's (and that second piece is stunning...did you dye that???). But love the grey with the yellow flowers too, reminds me of your tree mahonia tree.
Our wattle trees have beautiful, fluffy yellow flowers...I am now wondering if they have the same properties as the mahonia? Your post has just reminded me that they will begin blooming again in July/August. always something to look forward to in winter... a sign that sunshine and longer days are on their way again.
Very strange year here. The days are getting quite short, but the weather is so much milder than normal (which I am enjoying)...it is worrying though.
New moon, sign of Taurus...I'm a taurean, better start a new project.

    1. Hi Jacky! Thanks, I realized I need to go find more of the dark blue linen as this piece isn't big enough. So I've only worked on the yellow & gray so far.

Seems like we've all had a bit of strangeness in our seasons the past months. I feel the same way as you -- it's nice but also unsettling. Hope you had a great weekend starting a new project!

  5. Love the fabrics! It's so much fun to try the different plants for dyeing. I need to try dandelions again.
