a mysterious murmuration

A murmuration is a group of starlings. They fly in amazing patterns and you may have seen similar videos before. Their basic choreography seems to be when your neighbor moves, you move too. But from what I've read, just exactly how a large murmuration -- like this one in the thousands -- synchronizes itself instantly is yet to be discovered -- possibly something about proteins and neurons. I'm thinking "universal intelligence" would be good words here.

I love that it's a mystery for now. And can you even imagine being in that canoe?

  1. Amazing picture. I think I would be pedaling very fast "somewhere", but where?

  3. What a gift that moment would have been... I think it's good that somethings remain a mystery.

  4. This reminds me of the aurora borealis and ghost, etc.
Some things are just mystical and moments are magical. When moments like this happen I just try to revel in them and accept them for all they are. I have come to the grand conclusion that I will always have questions that will have no answer...at least here.

  6. Great Women Deb, Marie & Trish, those starlings give us a magical gift everytime this happens! I've seen murmurations of several hundred maybe, but they haven't flown patterns even remotely like this -- at least from my view. ;)
